[Snapshot of 0523_00102.jpg] Curries -- A few of the yummy curries served at the workshop-participants dinner at the Jenney Club in Coimbatore.

[Snapshot of 0525_085.jpg] Food stall -- An expansive fried-vegetables food stall, near Pillars of Rock at Kodaikkanal

[Snapshot of 0525_087r.jpg] Cotton candy -- A motorcycle-powered cotton candy enterprise, also near Pillars of Rock. The red fruits at left might be plums; but they look a little larger than plums commonly available around Kodaikkanal, so might instead be "tree tomatoes", another local item.

[Snapshot of betel.jpg] Betel stand, Moshe's figure 7 -- "Everywhere, and at each streetcorner, one can find betel leaf sellers ... The fresh leaf is filled with tobacco and numerous spices or sweet ingredients according to the buyer's individual taste. The product is then rolled and placed between gum and cheek to provide good taste, oral hygiene, dental discoloration and oral cancer. I elected to chew and swallow the product which resulted in immediate mild euphoria, some hyperactivity and well being and even slight loss of orientation; it also satisfied my hunger ... then I understood why men stop all the time and dish out 5 rupees to re-stuff their mouths." - Moshe

[Snapshot of bread.jpg] Bread, Moshe's figure 2 -- "Essentially, Indians consume a 'reversed Atkins diet' (high carb, low fat) and thus the only fatties one sees in the streets are foreigners or the children of Indians visiting from the USA. A diet of bread (figure 2) corn, fruits (figure 3), washed down with endless cups of sweet-milky-frosty chai (figure 4), supplemented for energy with glasses of fresh sweetened lime juice (figure 5) or a carb boost of sugarcane juice (figure 6) keep the masses lean, well hydrated and active. Peanuts or nuts serve as in-between munchies. And at night -- again bread, veg curry and perhaps a piece of chicken or fish."

[Snapshot of corn_cow.jpg] Corn, Moshe's figure 3 -- Corn being shucked and roasted. The round red item by the seller is a hand-cranked blower for the fire.

[Snapshot of lime.jpg] Lime, Moshe's figure 5 -- Limes are local produce in southern India

[Snapshot of sugercane.jpg] Sugercane, Moshe's figure 6 -- A sugercane press and a few canes. The juice guy runs a stalk of cane through the press half-a-dozen times, folding it in half several times and setting the press progressively tighter, to thoroughly wring out the cane.

[Snapshot of tea.jpg] Chai, Moshe's figure 4 -- Chai is the Hindi word for tea

[Snapshot of victoria.jpg] Moshe's figure 2 -- At Victoria station, "a family calmly takes its tea amidst the organized chaos."
