Trip-To-India Pictures

I am grateful to John Thanakumar, Moshe Schein, Vinay Mehendale, and Sayandev DasGupta ([jt], [ms], [vm], and [sdg]) for permission to include photographs by them on these web pages. - James Waldby - 5 Aug 2004

Most Coimbatore photos and all Kodaikkanal, Madurai, and Surgical Conference photos date from 21 May - 1 June 2004. Other pictures were taken then or from Nov 2004 - Feb 2005. Vellore photos were taken Nov-Dec 2004; Ooty pictures 31 Dec 2004 - 1 Jan 2005; Kolkata pictures 6 Jan - 4 Feb 2005.

Coimbatore photos typically are in or near Coimbatore city, Tamil Nadu state, India, a small town of 8 to 18 lakh persons. 1 lakh = 100000. Surgical Conference photos are from MIS ICON 2004 (Minimally Invasive Surgery International Conference) at Kovai Medical Center Hospital in Coimbatore. Please email j-waldby@pat7.com for caption corrections.

Pictures under the Kodaikkanal heading were taken at the Kodaikkanal "hill station", altitude 2300 m, about 110 km southeast of Coimbatore.

Pictures under the Madurai heading were taken at Madurai, about 150 km southeast of Coimbatore.

Vellore pictures were taken mostly at Vellore, a small city (5 lakh?) on the road between Chennai and Bangalore. Also in this section at the moment are pictures from weekend trips to Pondicherry and Bangalore.

Originals of Vellore pictures haven't been uploaded yet - 12 Feb 2005 - there are small copies (about 640x480) instead. Also, numerous captions and pictures are missing (not yet uploaded) at the moment

Ooty pictures were taken in the Nilgiris, a mountainous northwestern district of Tamil Nadu. The Nilgiris are around 50 km northwest of Coimbatore; well west of Bangalore, slightly east of northern Kerala.

Kolkata pictures were taken in Kolkata, West Bengal. Before 2002 Kolkata was called Calcutta. We stayed at guesthouses in Salt Lake City, an affluent region of town, altitude about 2300 mm. Beginning in the 1960's, Salt Lake was constructed on land created by filling in 3000 acres of a shallow salt lake, with sand dredged from the Hugli River and transported several miles overland in fluid state in a pipeline.

Kolkata captions haven't been prepared yet - 12 Feb 2005
